What are Swiss vocational titles worth in Germany and France?
Switzerland maps its vocational levels 1 to 1 onto the European framework. The surprise is that the higher-sounding federal diploma sits at the same level as the HF diploma.
short answer
The Swiss framework for vocational qualifications is mapped directly onto the European one, so the Swiss level is the European level. Brevet fédéral, the eidgenössischer Fachausweis, is level 5; the diplôme ES or Diplom HF is level 6; the eidgenössisches Diplom from a higher federal examination is also level 6, not 7. Being at level 6 does not make the holder a bachelor and does not open university admission by itself.
the mapping we use
eidgenössischer Fachausweis / brevet fédéral
Switzerland
Standard placement published by the federal office; individual exceptions exist.
Diplom HF / diplôme ES
Switzerland
Same level as the eidgenössisches Diplom, which surprises almost everyone.
Meister, Techniker, Fachwirt
Germany
Meister and Fachwirt at 6, Techniker at 5; match the specific title, not the family.
BTS at 5, licence at 6
France
No standardised French counterpart; French professional bodies often dispute the pairing.
This page compares framework levels. It is not a recognition decision: only the national body of the destination country can issue one.
